Every Student at Athena Needs to Take a Stretch Course

As we move into course selection for next year in the coming months, remember that we asking every student to take stretch courses.  This means we are looking for all students to consider challenging themselves by taking classes that may seem a bit harder then they are used to.  Inevitably this will increase the number of students requesting AP and Pre-Ap classes as well as dual credit courses.  It will mean more students are trying additional electives at the upper grade levels.

With this in mind, please take a moment to look at the video below about ways that schools around the country are making AP courses accessible to students who traditionally would never be recommended for an AP course.  The exciting thing is that these schools are finding that students are rising to the challenge and emerging as college ready learners who may not have been pushed to do so otherwise.

Don’t be turned off by the book’s title; Mindset: The New Psychology of Success gives a practical argument as to why pushing ALL students to accept these challenges is key to altering their attitudes toward both education and brighter potential future opportunites–regardless of whether or not we see them as “smart” students (and therfeore “worthy”) or not.
