Book Summary: The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Book Title: The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Author: Patrick Lencioni

Summary: by Jackie Goodwine

This book explains the five main dysfunctions of teams and provides examples of how to identify them in the work place.  Then it describes principles to put into practice to transform your own leadership team.  The heart of the book is written as a fable in order to illustrate how the dysfunctions surface in the real world.

The five dysfunctions are as follows:

  1. An absence of trust among the team members
  2. Fear of conflict
  3. Lack of commitment
  4. An avoidance of accountability
  5. Inattention to results

Therefore, truly cohesive teams:

  1. Trust one another
  2. Engage in unfiltered conflict around ideas
  3. Commit to decisions and plans of action
  4. Hold one another accountable for delivering against those plans
  5. Focus on the achievement of collective results
