Close Reading: A Simple Perspective

I watched a speech by Commissioner King last night in which he articulated the NYSED vision for the Common Core. When he spoke about the close reading activities that will anchor this vision he used the phrase “close and thoughtful reading” several times.  I thought that although that is rather simplistic, at it helped clarify the meaning of close reading well.  The point is really the thoughtful analysis, led by the instructor, of challenging texts.

“Close and thoughtful reading.” I like the simplicity of his way of defining this concept.
